The Real Ipoh Oldtown White Coffee

Okay. Here's my contribution to this blog.

Alright, you go to Oldtown White Coffee and order a glass of Iced White Coffee and it'll cost you RM3.80 excluding tax, and you'll get a glass full of ice and little coffee to enjoy. So, if you happen to be in Ipoh....
...you come here. It's somewhere in town la....

...and you order this (the drink, not the boy). Coffee flavour's just nice, not too mild, not too strong. Icy cold to quench your thirst on a hot sunny day. And of course, the ice-drink ratio is not as bad as Oldtown's. Even non-coffee lovers will love it. How much? RM1.50 per glass, no tax.

Ishin Japanese Dining @ Old Klang Road 3 3/4 Mile - Kuala Lumpur, W. P.

An occasional Japanese fare is nothing new for us Malaysians living here in the Land of Food.

Just Sunday (May 9th 2010 and Mother's Day too) I had the chance to visit a new restaurant situated at Old Klang Road with my family.

Outside view of the Restaurant - photo taken from their official website

The seafood there was so very fresh I swear you can still see it moving. (Pardon the hyperbole)

Sadly, I only have 2 photos of the food as I was focusing on gobbling everything else.

The Chef's Special Sashimi

Price: The menu states 'Market Price' but my bill states a shocking, whopping RM240++
It was VERY fresh and tender nevertheless.

Other dishes I'd recommend after eating them on my trip there were : The Wagyu Stone Grill - which is actually stoned grilled agoshima Wagyu A5 Grade Beef; and the Hawaiian Roll.

The Wagyu Gill was the best beef I've ever eaten albeit pricey. Seriously. Tender and juicy and the consistency of the taste of the sauce it was marinated in was simply fantastic. It felt like eating warm, melting marshmallows. And the fragrance of it on the grill can make you salivate any time.

Next up, was the very interesting Hawaiian Roll.
It was a long plateful of Fried Shrip sushi rolls, half of the sushi had extra sweet mango on it. And the plate was decorated with a mayonnaise-like sauce and some greens. Hence the name 'Hawaiian'. Sushi with fruit? Not a bad combo.

I know you must be cursing my incompetence with the photographs, but fret not. I leave you with a link of  images of the food they serve. What's great about this link is, its an automatic slide show of what the restaurant offers. Just click *me!*

Ishin Japanese Dining is located at:

Batu 3 3/4,
Off Jalan Kelang Lama,

(It is near 3rd Mile Square but on the opposite side of the road. Directly opposite the Mobil petrol station and right after the Shell petrol station)

Laksa, Cendol and Ice Kacang @ Lebuh Keng Kwee - Georgetown, Penang

You're in Penang, and you are hungry. Where do you head to?

Lebuh Keng Kwee, a small junction off Jalan Penang, is your answer!

They even have a plaque with a whole history for this street put up.

This street/small ally hosts the best Asam Laksa and Ais Kacang that can surely satisfy any craving.

First up, the Asam Laksa, or plainly known as Laksa in Penang.

Located in the corner lot restaurant on the right side of the street (called Joo Hui Coffee Shop), seats are hard to find at any hour of the day, provided the stall hasn't run out of Laksa. They also have these little booth-like seats which are really close together and have 90 degree backs. Must be antiques too.

See how packed the place is?
One of the 90 degree seats on the right.

Back to the laksa.

The waiting time between the moment I ordered a bowl and it's delivery to my table wasn't long at all despite the many customers waiting in the shop mainly for two things - it's famous Char Kuey Teow (of which I didn't try out) and of course, the Laksa. And I even ordered 8 bowls.

7 for my family, of course.

I stood next to the small stall observing the amazing pace the two, yes TWO, stall owners were going at. One manning the soup and noodles, the other manning the toppings, and orders. So who takes cares of the food delivery? The people who place the orders. That explains why it took so fast for my order to arrive.
The self-delivery system seems to be a tacit understanding among everyone who placed an order. Heck, even I didn't know why I stood waiting to carry the bowls over to my table after ordering.

Waiting for my Laksa

Time to cut the crap and onwards to the Laksa. The portion was reasonable, and somewhat cheap, for the only RM3.00 bowl of noodles. It came with tonnes of mint leaves, onions, and strips of pineapple. The soup was amazing and steaming hot, with the right amount of sourness and spiciness to tell your brain you're eating laksa but not so much as to make your face shrivel. Just the aroma of it can make you drool buckets. On top of that, it comes with a whole spoonful of 'har ko' (prawn paste)! This har ko is the crux of a bowl of authentic Penang Laksa. No har ko equals to no Penang Laksa.

Snapping this photo delayed my eating time.
My family was already gobbling away when I took this shot.

What do you do after eating a bowl of very delicious Laksa? Order another. Which I did. Or, you can walk a few steps out of the laksa place and grab dessert. Literally.

Just next to the corner lot that houses the laksa, is a small cart-like stall that houses the best Ais Kacang and Cendol around.

Since there isn't a place to sit and it's a roadside stall, everyone stands around eating the cool dessert. And you won't believe the crowd. Ordering a bowl is itself a Herculean task.

Try standing all the way here to place your order

My family and I ordered both the Cendol and the Ais Kacang. Both took a while to arrive. We were all hot and sweaty standing there waiting. I think they do that on purpose so you'd order another round.

When the bowls came, we instantly gobbled everything down and was immediately transported to paradise.
I didn't even manage to snap a photo of the initially very nicely presented Cendol so.. here's one of it all melted but still tasted really good.

So yummy I terus makan je and forgot to ambil gambar

But, I did remember to grab a photo of the great Ais Kacang.

Very colouful stuff. And I love the Atapchi/Atapchee/Atapji!

The crowd never died off and by the time I was done, even more people came.

A sign on the stall reads 'Penang Road Famous Teo Chew Chendul - Ais Kacang' and you definitely cannot deny this.

Even Phua Chu Kang and wife Rosie came all the way to Penang to eat here ah! So dun pray pray.

The Laksa and Ais Kacang stalls are both located at Lebuh Keng Kwee, Off Penang Road, Georgetown, Penang Island. Near the Chowrasta Market and the Police Station.
A map to the place can be found *here*

Funnny Mountain Tau Foo Fah @ Jalan Theatre - Ipoh, Perak

Looking for a quick sweet treat in Ipoh? Look no further!

The most famous Tau Foo Fah can be found along Jalan Theatre, close to where all the famous Ipoh taugeh chicken rice shops are.

You just know this place is that big a deal when this is its operational hours:

Be sure to be there early to avoid disappointment!

The queue can be pretty long, but it moves real fast with its super efficient staff around.

They even have drive-thru! You won't believe the car-line that packs the place. Talk about high-tech.

What's so great about Funny Mountain?
*
This bowl of soya bean curd, of course. Smooth and soya-bean-curdish as ever.
And it comes with 2 different sugar syrups: brown and white!

Who Deals with the Food: An Intro to the GrubGobblers

Welcome fellow food lovers to this humble food blog on humble food by humble food eaters.

Lo and behold, an introduction to the contributors (a.k.a GrubGobblers) of this blog!

Adrian aka Sir TJW Eatsalot - The head honcho and  initiator of We Live To Eat (WLTE). Free food? Leftovers to conquer? New restaurant to try out? Spurred on by his ultimate goal and destiny to put on weight, never underestimate the chowing capabilities of this lad.

Jason aka HRH Royal Fruit - Famous for his famous line: 'Are you finishing that?', he can be one heck of a DBKL/Alam Flora on the dinner table. Never fussy, he would try all sorts of foods, yet can be a heavy critique when it comes to quality of the substances he puts in his mouth.

Ju Vern aka Dr. Waffles - Well-known among her peers for the occasional "I want waffles" statement, she can be quite the picky eater. Bananas? Ew. Mashed potatoes or cookies? Sure. A picky eater - when she doesn't like it, she doesn't like it.

Maple aka Agent Syrup - With a sister named after the famous fruit that fell upon Sir Isaac Newton's head, this lass is an expert in desserts. Chocolate? Cakes? Pies? Ice-cream? Living by the motto: 'DESSERTS FOR THE WIN!', her sweet tooth packs a punch. Looking for someone to go sugar high with? This is your girl. She's Syrup after all. Maple Syrup.

Yoong Chieh aka Captain 'Cendol' YC - Hailing from the land of food where he received his culinary training, he is not one to kid around with. Learning from his experiences in PLKN (the National Service), he knows what defines good food. Cendol and street food are his specialties. A football match with Liverpool going on? It's off to the mamak for some great food and game atmosphere for this El Capitan.

And last but not least,

Syn Dee aka DaHorse'sMouth - Despite being the pastry chef of the lot, she hates choosing food, which make restaurant menus indecisive battles for her. Food photography is another another hobby apart from eating for this lass. Prepare to salivate all over your keyboard with the yummy stuff you'll soon find her reviewing.

Now you got to know them. Come back soon as our contributors give you the behind-the-scenes view on food, food, oh glorious food.
